Our story

PCC Hydrogen began inside a catalyst company.

Pyrochem Catalyst Company spent years developing advanced catalyst materials for applications ranging from emissions mitigation to fuel reforming. That expertise pointed to a larger opportunity: a practical way to produce clean hydrogen from ethanol. In December 2022, PCC Hydrogen was established as a standalone company to commercialize that technology.

    By using ethanol as a hydrogen carrier, PCC Hydrogen produces hydrogen on site without relying on hydrogen pipelines, long-haul transport, or large new grid loads: a distributed clean-energy platform for mobility, power generation, and industrial applications.

  1. December 2022

    PCC Hydrogen established as a standalone company

    Spun off from Pyrochem Catalyst Company to commercialize ethanol-to-hydrogen technology.

  2. March 2023

    Detailed engineering completed: 300 kg/day system

    Full detailed engineering for the 300 kg/day system completed by Plant Process Group.

  3. July 2023

    Core technology patent issued

    U.S. patent granted covering the ethanol-to-hydrogen production technology.

  4. August 2023

    USDA SBIR Phase I award secured

    A competitive Small Business Innovation Research Phase I award from USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, plus a State of Kentucky matching grant.

  5. October 2023

    Hydrogen combustion demonstration MOU signed

    Cummins, Terex Advance Mixer, Edge Materials, and PCC Hydrogen agreed to produce, trial, and prove concrete mixer trucks powered by hydrogen-fueled engines.

  6. October 2023

    Cement and materials MOU signed

    Summit Materials and its subsidiary Continental Cement Company entered an MOU with PCC Hydrogen to explore lowering carbon emissions in cement and materials production.

  7. August 2024

    USDA SBIR Phase II award secured

    A Phase II award from USDA NIFA to build and prove the oxidative reformer reactor prototype.

  8. December 2024

    EcoEngineers analysis completed

    Third-party carbon-intensity analysis completed by EcoEngineers.

  9. March 2025

    Independent lifecycle study published

    NLR-co-authored study published in Biofuels, Bioproducts & Biorefining (opens in a new tab).

  10. October 2025

    Louisville pilot reactor complete

    40 times scale up of benchtop reactor demonstrated.

  11. November 2025

    THRIVE grant awarded

    THRIVE grant accelerates Inland Empire development activities. Funding began in February 2026.

  12. December 2025

    Series A first close

    First close of the Series A financing.

  13. December 2025

    Cloverdale facility FID complete

    Final investment decision completed for the first commercial facility in Cloverdale, Indiana.

  14. May 2026

    Front End Engineering and Design completed: 3 ton/day system

    Front End Engineering and Design for the 3 ton/day system completed by Plant Process Group.

    California office opened

Chief Executive Officer

Tim Fogarty

Tim Fogarty is co-founder and CEO of PCC Hydrogen and founder and CEO of Pyrochem Catalyst Company, which develops and manufactures advanced catalyst materials for emissions mitigation and fuel reforming. Over more than two decades, he has built, financed, and commercialized energy technologies. His earlier operating roles include serving as CFO of fuel-cell developer INI Power Systems and founding and co-leading Phoenix Coal Corporation, which commercialized university-licensed technology and completed an IPO. Tim earned an A.B. from Harvard University and subsequently served four years as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps.

President & Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Jeffrey Harrison

Dr. Harrison is President and CTO of PCC Hydrogen. Dr. Harrison has an extensive background in catalyst development, process engineering and system deployments, including the development and scale-up of a catalyst production system for Pyrochem Catalyst Company.

Previously, he served as Director of Technology for Innovatek, Chief Operating Officer for INI Power Systems, and Chief Engineering Officer for Maverick Synfuels.

After earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Florida, Harrison embarked on a successful career at Texaco Inc., where he spent 18 years working in various roles, including research, corporate planning, strategic development, and alternative energy initiatives. His experience at Texaco led him to work with both upstream and downstream business units across the globe, providing him with a unique perspective on the energy value chain.

EVP Business Development

Chris Scholtes

Chris Scholtes is Executive Vice President for Business Development at PCC Hydrogen, where he is globally developing the ethanol-to-hydrogen and ethanol-to-power ecosystems anchored by PCC Hydrogen production facilities.

He comes to the role from DEUTZ, where over 16 years he moved through a succession of strategic and operational roles in Germany and the USA before serving as Chief Technology Officer for the Americas, guiding the company through its energy transformation. There he led the teams responsible for engineering, product development, operations, logistics, quality, and technical customer support across a $500 million business, and was a principal architect of the technology-agnostic strategy behind DEUTZ's move into electrified and hydrogen power, building the joint ventures and the industry, academic, and regulatory partnerships that gave the transition its credibility.

He holds a German Dipl.-Ing. (FH) in Mechanical Engineering and a British MBA in Strategic Management.
